Restorative justice is a program based on respect, responsibility, relationship-building and relationship-repairing. It focuses on mediation and agreement rather than punishment. It aims to keep kids in school and to create a safe environment where learning can flourish. And it appears to be working incredibly well.
Taking Responsibility
Teaching students to take responsibility for their choices and actions is the first step in creating a restorative justice environment. Once students admit to their actions, then they can work on restoring any relationships and items that have been wronged.
Restoring Relationships
Through conversations mediated with staff, students will be given the opportunity to make things right and explore better choices in the future. These are skills that we hope will be used in all aspects of our student's lives.
